Teams ESPN likes more than APR:

Packers (+14)

ESPN had the Packers overrated when they were without Aaron Rodgers (and Randall Cobb), so it's fair to say APR has them underrated now that they've returned. Still, I don't think a late win over a not-very-good Bears team is worth a 4 spot bump.

Bears (+10)

Maybe APR has them ranked a bit too low at #25, but #15 is too high for the Bears and their awful defense. Only the Vikings allowed more points this year. and only the Cowboys and Vikings allowed more yards.

Cowboys (+7)

APR and ESPN both drop the Cowboys 2 spots after losing to the Eagles. This is another team with a bad defense, and shouldn't be ranked as high as #17.

On the Bubble

Nobody closer than the Lions, Chiefs, Broncos, and Colts (all +5).

Teams APR likes more than ESPN:

Rams (-11)

APR has the Rams rated way too high at #9.

Buccaneers (-10)

And #17 is too high for the 4-12 Buccaneers.

What this is

Teams ESPN likes more than APR:

Packers (+11)

The Packers' defense is somewhere between weak and flat-out awful. And Matt Flynn is prone to interceptions, fumbles, and late game confusion. Like I said in the week 15 writeup, without Aaron Rodgers, the Packers don't belong anywhere near the middle of the power rankings.

Bears (+8)

ESPN somehow holds the Bears steady after their 43-point beat down at the hands of the Eagles. And besides their awful defense, quarterback Jay Cutler has been playing poorly enough to generate calls to bench him in favor of career backup Josh McCown.

Cowboys (+7)

ESPN raises the Cowboys 3 spots for their last-minute 1 point win over the hapless Redskins. The Cowboys are really not a very good team, and if Tony Romo can't finish the season, it's gonna be that much worse for them.

On the Bubble

APR and ESPN both drop the Chiefs (+6) 4 spots on their home loss to the Colts. They really haven't looked very good since that 9-0 start.

APR and ESPN both raise the Colts (+6) 2 spots on their road win over the Chiefs. It's easily their most impressive win since beating the Broncos in week 7.

Teams APR likes more than ESPN:

Buccaneers (-11)

I'm not really sure why APR raised the Bucs 3 spots after their 10-point loss to the Rams. Another double-digit loss next week, and Coach Schiano could be out.

Rams (-10)

The good news for the Rams is they're just one win away from their first 8-win season since 2006. The bad news is, they'll be in Seattle, facing a Seahawks team that needs one more win to clinch the division and the top seed. On the other hand, the Rams have a few impressive upsets on their schedule, and are 4-2 in their last 6 games.

On the bubble:

The Giants (-6) disasterous 0-6 start pretty much wrecked their chances for the playoffs. But they've gone 6-3 since then, and don't really belong in the bottom 10 teams of the power rankings.

Similarly, the Steelers (-6) have gone 7-4 since their 0-4 start, and actually have a sliver of a chance to sneak into the playoffs. But APR probably has them ranked too high at #12.

NFL APR vs. ESPN Week 15

Yeah, this is for last week. Better late than never? I was getting this week's post ready, and noticed I never posted the week 15 version. But I still have the writeup on my hard drive, so here it is.

Teams ESPN likes more than APR:

Packers (+11)

Matt Flynn has now played 14 quarters of football for the Packers this season. In 6 of those quarters, he was really awful. In 8 of those quarters, he was okay. And in two of those quarters, he was really good. The end result is that in spite of a 2-4-1 record since Rodgers got hurt, the Packers still have a chance for the playoffs. But until Rodgers comes back, they don't really deserve a spot in the middle of thepower rankings.

On the bubble:

APR drops the Chiefs (+6) 2 spots for taking the trouble to demolish a really bad Raiders team. That drop may also be their earlier wins getting less weight, which means their 3 game losing streak counts for more.

The Colts (+6) haven't beaten a team outside the AFC South since October.

Teams APR likes more than ESPN:

Rams (-9)

Four of the Rams wins this seasons have come against teams that are either in the playoffs, or in contention. But #11 is still too high for an 8-loss team.

On the bubble:

APR drops the Buccaneers (-6) a couple spots after they got pounded by the 49ers. They clearly still have some problems to solve, but Coach Schiano has (probably) saved his job, at least for this year.

NFL Week 14 APR vs. ESPN

What this is

Teams ESPN likes more than APR:

Bears (+8)

ESPN moves the Bears up a couple spots after their beat-down of the hapless Cowboys defense. Which, to put things in perspective, is probably their best showing since their week 3 victory over the Steelers.

Jets (+7)

ESPN moves the Jets up a couple spots this week. #21 is really too near the middle of the pack for a team with 6 really ugly losses on their record, including 2 in their home stadium.

On the bubble:

The Lions (+6) are 1-3 in their last 4 games, and have turned the ball over 15 times in that strech. That doesn't seem like a #12 team to me.

The Packers (+6) are 1-4-1 in their last 6. Aaron Rodgers might (or might not) be back next week. But for now, APR's rank of #24 seems about right.

Teams APR likes more than ESPN:

Buccaneers (-8)

The Bucs are 4-1 in their last 5, losing only to the surging Panthers on the road. They're out of the playoffs, which is why ESPN doesn't like them, but they're sure not an easy win anymore, either.

Rams (-7)

APR and ESPN both hold the Rams steady on their loss to the Cardinals. APR has them at #13, which is too high for an 8-loss team.

Falcons (-7)

APR moves the Falcons up 1 on their 1-point road loss to the Packers. I'm not really sure why APR has them as high as #23, although they did have a close loss to the Saints in week 12, which may make them seem better than they are.

On the bubble:

APR has the Chargers (-6) at #11, which is too high for a 6-7 team.

NFL Week 13 APR vs. ESPN

What this is

Teams ESPN likes more than APR:

Jets (+8)

APR drops the Jets to #31 after their 20-point home loss to the Dolphins. None of those teams in the bottom 10 (of either ranking) are any good, I feel like it's splitting hairs to make a distinction between #31 and #23.

Bears (+7)

APR and ESPN both drop the Bears a spot on their loss to the Vikings. To update last week's post, the Bears have now gone 3-6 since their 3-0 start, and APR's ranking at #22 is seeming less harsh.

On the bubble:

Nobody closer than the Browns (+5)

Teams APR likes more than ESPN:

Giants (-7)

APR likes the Giants because they're 5-1 in their last 6 games. ESPN doesn't like them because their 0-6 start means they're all but eliminated from the playoffs.

Rams (-7)

APR raised the Rams a spot on their 10-point road loss to the 49ers. They did rise in power, thanks to a relatively close road win against a much more powerful opponent. But they also rise up because of the power vaccum left by the fall of the Chargers.

On the bubble

For some reason, ESPN dropped the Cardinals (-6) 4 spots on their 7-point road loss to the Eagles. Yeah, their defense looked bad for more than half of the game, but they did shut down the Eagles for most of the second half. For now, I'm going to stick with my claim that the Cardinals deserve a spot in the top 10.

APR dropped the Bears 9 spots on their blow-out loss to the Rams, which might be a little harsh. On the other hand, the Bears have gone 3-5 since their 3-0 start. They just haven't been playing very good football since September.

Another crushing road loss for the Jets brings their respective APR and ESPN rankings one place closer together. Maybe #25 is too low for a 5-5 team, but for a team that's 4-1 at home, they are really, really bad on the road.

Colts (+7)

APR and ESPN both hold the Colts steady on their bye week. Nothing to add beyond what I wrote last week about the Colts.

NFL Week 10 APR vs. ESPN

What this is

ESPN moves the Jets up 2 spots on their bye, while APR drops them 1. #22 (APR) is too low for a team with a winning record, but #12 (ESPN) is too high for a team that's 1-3 on the road, and has 3 blow-out losses on their record.

Colts (+7)

I think I'm with APR on this one. The Colts' offense just hasn't been the same since Reggie Wayne got hurt. Maybe the loss to the Rams was a fluke, but they've still got some tough games coming up, and their division isn't won yet.

Colts (+8)

ESPN bumps the Colts up to the #2 spot after the Colts win over the Texans. Yeah, the come back was impressive. The fact that they fell behind 18 points to a team that hasn't won since the middle of September is not. (Nor is the fact that their comeback would've fallen short, if the Texans had any kind of a field goal kicker.)

Jets (+7)

On the one hand, the Jets have wins over the Patriots and Siants. On the other hand, they also got curb-stomped by the Bengals, Titans, and Steelers(!). I guess #14 is a justifiable ranking for a team with a 5-4 record, but at the same time, it's hard to overlook those ugly losses, even at the middle of the field.

On the bubble:

APR dropped the Raiders (+6) 9 spots after getting destroyed by the on-again, off-again Eagles. Perhaps not totally fair, but they did lose by 4 scores, at home, to what has been a mostly off-again team.

Teams APR likes more than ESPN:

Packers (-7)

Yeah, even factoring out the Aaron Rodgers situation, APR has the Packers ranked way too high at #4. Besides getting Rodgers back, they're going to have to do a lot better on defense to get to the playoffs this year.

Somehow ESPN only drops the Jets a single spot after getting absolutely demolished by the Bengals. With losses like that one (and the 25 point loss to the Titans a few weeks ago), the Jets just don't seem like they belong as high as #16.

APR and ESPN both move the Packers (-6) up one spot after their dismantling of the Vikings. I don't really have anything to add over what I said last week. Except that the Bears and Lions are the only opponents left on the Packers' schedule that have winning records. So, especially if they can handle the Cutlerless Bears Monday night, they will have a pretty clear shot to a third consecutive division title.

Jets (+7)

I'm not quite sure what to make of the Jets right now. The Patriots are the only quality team they've beaten, and they've had a couple late wins pretty much gifted to them. On the other hand, their defense has been doing pretty well, and Geno Smith has only a couple games with a passer rating lower than 71.9. If they can even split their next two games (@ Bengals, vs Saints), I'll be willing to admit they belong higher in the rankings.

Cardinals (-9)

As mentioned last week, Carson Palmer is the weak link on this team, and he threw a couple more game-breaking interceptions last Thursday. Still, I think because of the strength of their defense and special teams, the Cards are better than at least a few of the teams ESPN has ranked above them (Browns, Falcons, Eagles)

On the bubble:

The Packers (-6), and all the other highly ranked teams seem pretty close together, and I don't see a real favorite. All of the teams ESPN has rated above them have a better win-loss record, so I don't see anything to complain about ESPN's #9 rank. This is another difference that will have to be resolved going forward.

Bears (+8)

The Bears have a 1-point win over the (now) 1-4 Vikings, and a 6-point win over the 0-6 Giants. Not exactly the stuff of legend. They're 1-3 against teams that ESPN has in the top half of their rankings. Maybe APR has them underrated at #18, but they seem a little weak for the top 10, too.

APR has the Cardinals (-6) at #15 because they're 3-3. But Carson Palmer is really struggling. I think he would actually be okay in that system, if he could just stop throwing interceptions. But so far, he's thrown 11 interceptions (at least one in every game) and only 5 touchdowns. I have to wonder how close HC Bruce Arians is to benching him.

49ers (+7)

The 49ers win over the Texans was impressive, but I think they need to do more to put those ugly losses to the Seahawks and Colts behind them before I'm willing to call them a top 10 team.

On the bubble:

The Texans (+6) might be able to pull out of their tailspin, but they don't have a lot of headroom anymore to get into the playoffs. And with the way the offense has been struggling, they may have trouble getting to 8 wins this year. At 2-3, with the prospect of a lot more losses to come, I don't see the justification to rank them in the top half of the league.

I think ESPN's ranking of #30 for the Buccanneers (+6) is largely a reflection of the dysfunction evident within that organization. APR has them at #24, which seems pretty fair according to what they've actually done on the field.

APR has the Cardinals (+6) at #13, which is probably too high. Carson Palmer is at least somewhat of an upgrade over the quarterbacks they had last year, but that position remains very much the weak link for the Cardinals. Still, I guess wins and losses trump every other stat, and while the Cards are at 3-2, it's hard to justify ranking them too near some of the really bad teams in the league.

What this is

Teams ESPN likes more than APR:

49ers (+16)

APR is very much a what-have-you-done-lately system. And lately, the 49ers have a couple blow-out losses, and a couple wins over (so far) not very impressive teams. They're gonna have to do better than a win over the Rams to get to the top half of APR's rankings.

Bengals (+12)

Maybe APR has the Bengals underrated at #23, but their two wins (home, over the very bad Steelers and the struggling Packers) aren't that impressive.

Packers (+8)

So far, the Packers have one win, a blow-out of the struggling 1-3 Redskins. Next Sunday's game against the Lions should help resolve this APR/ESPN conflict, one way or the other.

Teams APR likes more than ESPN:

Bills (-12)

Thanks to their defense, the Bills have clawed their way to a 2-2 record (and could be 3-1 or even 4-0 if they had played a bit better in their two losses). I'm not sold on how good they are yet, but they're not a bottom 10 team.

Jets (-10)

The Jets are 2-2 as well, but it feels a lot more flukey for them. Take away a late penalty in week 1, and an offensive meltdown by the Bills, and they could easily be 0-4. We'll see how the season plays out, but based on what I've seen so far, I'll be surprised if the Jets finish in front of the Bills in the AFC East.

Buccaneers (-9)

Well, the good news for the Bucs is that in 3 of their 4 games, they've been in them right to the end. The bad news is they've lost because of sloppy, undisciplined play. The worse news is their offense is a mess, and they've switched to a rookie quarterback that, based on Sunday's performance, really isn't ready to be a starter. APR has them ranked at #22, but even at that low level, there's a good case that they're overrated.

Colts (+8)

The Colts have 2 road wins outside the AFC South. Their playoff game on Sunday could be over by halftime.

Falcons (+7)

I assume ESPN gave the Falcons the benefit of the doubt for not putting away the Buccaneers (in spite of playing all their starters for the whole game). APR did not, dropping them 3 spots.

Texans (+7)

I'm not really sure how ESPN still has the Texans in their top 10. Their record, especially since the bye, is really unimpressive. Does anyone see this team making it to the AFC Championship game?

Panthers (-8)

APR gives the Panthers a 5-spot bump on their 6-point win over the Saints. They finished with a respectable 6-3 record. On the other hand, one of those 3 losses came at the hands of the Chiefs.

Colts (+9)

ESPN gives the Colts a 1-spot bump on their 1-score win over the foundering Chiefs. The good news is they've clinched a playoff spot. Perhaps also counting as good news, they'll likely play the Ravens in the wildcard round, which is one of the few possible opponents that won't mean an easy win for the home team.

Texans (-7)

The Texans are really not giving the impression of a team building up momentum for the playoffs. Since their late October Bye week, they've gone to overtime against a couple bad teams, got blown out by the Patriots, and this week suffered a pretty embarrassing home loss to the Vikings.

Teams APR likes more than ESPN:

Saints (-7)

APR holds the Saints steady on their overtime win over the Cowboys. If this team had any kind of a defense at all, they'd be right in the thick of the playoff chase.

ESPN holds the Colts steady after their "expected" 2-score loss to the Texans, while APR drops them 3 spots. APR is probably also dropping them because their wins over the Vikings and Packers are getting less weight, and all the other Colts wins are over teams with losing records.

Panthers (-11)

Here we go again. The Panthers are 5-9, and well out of the playoffs. On the other hand, they are 3-1 in their last 4, including a solid win over the conference-leading Atlanta Falcons. (The Panthers also get a nice indirect boost because of how the Falcons dismantled the Giants this week.)

Saints (-8)

The Saints are another team benefitting from the Falcons rise in power, along with a dominating win over the Bucs.
