Comments

  • A note for Saints fans: even when you go on to win, it's just not good to fall behind 24-3, and it's not good to give up 34 points. You can be sure every team that has the Saints on their schedule will be studying this weeks game tape, watching for what the Dolphins did right, and what they did to blow that lead.

  • #4 seems high for the Cardinals. But I don't see enough solid teams to push them out of the top 10 right now, either.

  • I'm not sure what to make of the Texans—they started out 1-2, including a squeaker win over the hapless Titans. But since then, they nearly came back on the Cardinals, and beat the Bengals and 49ers. They've got enough soft teams on their schedule, if they can maintain that level of play, the Texans have a decent shot at a playoff berth.

  • This may be a big piece of the Texans' resurgance: Matt Schaub has been playing at a pro-bowl level. He is ranked #3 in passing yards/game, and has 16 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions.

Teams ESPN likes more than APR:

Eagles (+11)
The Eagles' victory over the Redskins does not impress. They only had two drives longer than 40 yards, and most of that came on just two plays. If the Redskins' offense wasn't such a trainwreck, they would've had a real chance to win.

Giants (+8)
No quality wins, and two big-time losses, yet ESPN still has the Giants in their top 10. Go figure. Update: I just noticed that the Cowboys have jumped into the top 10, so (for now), I have to credit the Giants with one (1) quality win.

I might also say that one of my original motivations for developing APR was an ESPN power ranking that (I felt) had the Giants ranked too high.

Teams APR likes more than ESPN:

Texans (-7), 49ers (-7)
A couple of teams that have displayed uneven quality so far this season. It may not be until late in the season before we know the true measure of either.
